Take care of your jewelry

Hello again!

We are already touching autumn and I think it would be interesting to tell you a little about the care of Saia Holistic Jewels pieces.

I talk a lot about how to take care of the pieces energetically, but I talk little about how to take care of them physically or aesthetically.

Let's talk about materials and how to clean them.

First of all, at Saia Holistic Jewels we only use noble materials, i.e. 925 silver and 18k gold, and they are always recycled . For me, it is vital that this part is 100% sustainable. We do not use brass (which is not a noble material in jewelry) or other materials that can cause allergies.

Silver is alive or has a life of its own, we could say. Silver tends to darken, sometimes faster and sometimes over time. When this happens, many people think it is because the silver is of poor quality or is not real silver . This is not true, it is the natural tendency of silver, it is something normal in this noble material.

I'll tell you a secret: silver does not oxidize, because it does not react to oxygen, but to sulfur . This sulfide "tarnishes" the silver, giving it that yellowish or black appearance.

What can darken silver?

The pH of the skin is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a certain substance, in this case we will talk about the skin. It has values between 0 and 14, with 7 being the neutral level, lower values would be considered acidity and higher values alkalinity. The skin of a normal person, who does not have epidermis or other health problems, ranges between 4.5 and 5.9 .

Sometimes you tell me “my friend and I bought it at the same time and we put the same thing on and hers is perfect and mine is starting to get darker” or “I used to have a lot of money and it hadn’t happened to me and now…” What happens here is the difference in pH, which can vary throughout life. Diet, hormonal changes or medical treatments have an influence.

On the other hand, we have the use of creams, perfumes or makeup , these also influence when in contact with the piece.

Sweat is another important factor, at which point our skin eliminates toxins that can damage silver.

Avoid contact with cleaning products such as bleach or ammonia , as they damage silver, 18K gold and plated pieces.

If you are not going to use the piece for a while, it is important to store it in its bag in a closed, dry place. Avoid leaving it hanging on the wall, in places such as the bathroom that are humid areas, as this can damage your piece.

Tips (for silver only)

If this happens to you, you can heat up some water, add a teaspoon of baking soda and scrub your piece with a toothbrush. This will help it regain its natural shine.

18K Gold Plating at Saia Holistic Jewels

I am especially proud of the gold plating we use at Saia Holistic Jewels, as it is the most ecological on the market, with no toxins that harm our body. And this has taken me a long time, but we have finally reached the perfect point.

80% of gold plating in Europe is done with cyanide and the piece is first given a nickel plating, nickel is a material that can cause atopic dermatitis among many other pathologies.

Gold plating is a layer of gold added to the piece. At Saia Holistic Jewels, our plating is cyanide-free, thus avoiding having toxins near lymph nodes and preventing your body from absorbing this chemical . Most companies use it because it is cheaper and achieves a striking and more durable gold color. But as long as you are in contact with this material. For me, this is not negotiable.

If you take care of what you eat, what you wash your clothes with, what creams you use, what perfumes or oils you use to avoid all these toxins, it should be the same with the pieces of jewelry you wear. That's why I'm very happy to use this bathroom.

What can we do to extend the life of our gold plating?

We have a factor that we cannot control and that is the pH, as I explained before, this can influence whether your bath lasts more or less.

You should avoid sweating , so take off your pieces when you are going to exercise, since as I mentioned before, sweat eliminates toxins and these can damage the bathroom.

Wear your jewelry on dry skin after using soaps, creams or perfumes.

Avoid heated pools and natural hot springs, the former due to the amount of chlorine and the latter due to the concentration of sulfur.

Avoid contact with cleaning products such as bleach or ammonia , as they damage silver, 18K gold and plated pieces.

If you are not going to wear your piece for a period of time, the same advice as with silver, store them in their bag in a dry place, avoid leaving them hanging on walls or in jewelry boxes that are not closed and avoid humid areas such as bathrooms.

Tips for gold plating

Clean it with a gold chamois and take into account the factors mentioned above.

We want your jewelry to last a lifetime.

That's why I created a "long life for your amulet" kit

What does that mean?

If over time your silver piece becomes ugly, and bicarbonate has not worked for you, we will whiten and polish the piece for a special price. Likewise, if your gold plating has faded over time - let's not forget that the plating is an added layer and with time and the above factors this can happen - we will re-plat your piece so that it looks like new, for a special price.

Likewise, if your chain breaks (due to pulling, training, babies or not so babies, very effusive furry paws) don't put it away in a drawer, write to us and we will give you a quote to fix it so you can continue using it.

For me, it is important that your piece always accompanies you and that you can continue using it, creating a “first aid kit of amulets” and always being able to use them.

And the last piece of advice to make your pieces last a long time and in good condition is to take great care of them and enjoy them, because we will always be here to lovingly fix your piece.

Have a nice day everyone.
